They inhabit everything from the deep sea to high mountain streams. They even live in subterranean waters.

Within the teleosts, one large subgroup is called Acanthomorpha. This subgroup alone contains 40% of all fish species.

Scientists have traced the history of these fish through fossils. The earliest known fossil of an actinopterygian is Andreolepis hedei. It dates back 420 million years to the Late Silurian period.

The crown group of actinopterygians likely began near the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary. Teleosts have diversified greatly since the Mesozoic era. Some teleost lineages have even undergone whole-genome duplication. This process happened about 320 million years ago in teleosts. It also happened in chondrosteans around 180 million years ago. Some groups, like salmon, experienced it 80 to 100 million years ago. Even goldfish experienced it as recently as 14 million years ago.

Reproduction in ray-finned fish is very varied. In most species, the sexes are separate. Females usually lay eggs that are fertilized externally by males.

However, some fish practice sequential hermaphroditism. This means they change their sex during their life. Protogyny is common, where a fish starts as a female and becomes a male. Protandry is less common, where a fish starts as a male and becomes a female. While most teleosts do not provide parental care, about 21% of families do. This includes viviparity, where live young are born. In these cases, male care is often more common than female care.

These fish demonstrate an incredible range of sizes. The smallest is the Paedocypris, which is only about 7.9 millimeters long. On the other end, the giant sunfish can reach 2,500 millimeters. The giant oarfish can reach 8 to 11 meters.

In the Jurassic period, the extinct Leedsichthys was even larger. It is estimated to have grown to 16 meters. This massive variety shows how well ray-finned fish have adapted to the world. They are connected to the history of all land animals. Tetrapods, or four-limbed vertebrates, actually evolved from a group of bony fish during the Devonian period.
