Despite their benefits, some adapters can cause unexpected problems. Inexpensive switched-mode supplies may lack enough shielding for electromagnetic interference. This can create high-energy harmonics that interfere with radio signals or WiFi. 
Recent scientific advancements have pushed adapter technology even further. In the early 2020s, engineers began using gallium nitride instead of silicon in switching adapters. This new material allows for much higher power output within the same physical size. This breakthrough means that tiny "wall wart" chargers can now power large devices like laptops. This shift was delayed for years due to high costs, but the demand for fast charging has made it a reality. From simple battery eliminators of the past to high-tech gallium nitride chargers, these small tools are essential to our connected world.
