Even with peace deals, the dispute remains. The land is beautiful, with mountains and sea.
Abkhazia is a unique place located in the South Caucasus region.

The political status of this land is a very big issue today. Abkhazia declared itself independent from Georgia in 1992. Because of this, many countries disagree on what Abkhazia is. Only five United Nations member states recognize it as an independent state. These five countries are Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria. Most other countries in the world see it as part of Georgia.
The history of this land goes back thousands of years. Between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, it was part of the Kingdom of Colchis.

Many different groups have ruled or lived in Abkhazia over time. In the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire began to have a lot of influence. They even built a fort in Sukhumi during the 18th century. Later, the Russian Empire took control of the region. In 1864, Russia officially made Abkhazia part of its empire.
Recent years have brought more conflict to the region. There was a war between 1992 and 1993. This war caused Georgia to lose control over most of the territory. In August 2008, another war happened between Abkhaz, Russian, and Georgian forces.

Abkhazia is a partially recognized state located in the South Caucasus.

The concept of recognition varies significantly across the globe. Only five United Nations member states formally recognize Abkhazia as an independent state. These nations are Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria. Two other states previously offered recognition but later withdrew it. Because Georgia lacks effective control over the territory, it maintains a government-in-exile. This political divide stems from the Abkhazia conflict. The region previously held autonomy as the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. This status existed within the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic during the late 1980s.
The history of the region is ancient and complex. Between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, the territory was part of the Kingdom of Colchis.
Following the Roman era, the region saw shifting powers and religions. The Byzantine Empire held influence over the area for many years. Anacopia served as a major capital during this period.
The 19th century brought major changes under the Russian Empire. Abkhazia first sought Russian protection in 1801. Russia declared it an autonomous principality in 1810.
Modern history has been defined by violent conflict. Simmering ethnic tensions led to the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia. This war resulted in Georgia losing control over most of the territory. It also led to the ethnic cleansing of Georgians from the region. Although a ceasefire was signed in 1994, the dispute remained unresolved. In August 2008, the Russo-Georgian War broke out.
Despite these political struggles, the geography of Abkhazia is notable. The landscape includes diverse features like mountains and coastal areas.
