He has held this position since 2018. He also serves as the leader of the Prosperity Party, which he formed in 2019. His leadership has brought major changes to Ethiopia's politics and economy. His father, Ahmed Ali, was a respected Oromo elder. His mother, Tezeta Wolde, sold traditional tej wine. Abiy was the 13th child of his father. His childhood name was Abiyot, which means "Revolution." He attended school in Agaro but later dropped out in the seventh grade. He then moved to the large city of Addis Ababa.

His journey into leadership began with military service. At age 14, he joined armed forces fighting the regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam. This group was the Oromo People's Democratic Organization, or OPDO. The OPDO was a very small group of about 200 fighters. They were part of a much larger coalition called the EPRDF. After the regime fell in 1991, Abiy joined the Ethiopian National Defense Force. He eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Abiy worked in several specialized military and intelligence roles. During the Badme War from 1998 to 2000, he was a radio operator. He led an intelligence team to find enemy positions. During the final days of that war, he narrowly escaped an artillery attack. This event led him to convert to Pentecostal Christianity. Later, he helped found the Information Network Security Agency, known as INSA.

This agency was modeled after the American NSA to handle intelligence and surveillance.

Abiy moved from the military into elected politics. In 2010, he was elected to the House of Peoples' Representatives. He represented the Agaro district in the Ethiopian parliament. During this time, he worked to stop religious violence. He helped create the Religious Forum for Peace to help Muslims and Christians coexist. In 2015, he became the Minister of Science and Technology. He also served as the Deputy President of the Oromia Region.

In 2018, Abiy rose to the highest level of government. The previous leader, Hailemariam Desalegn, resigned after years of unrest. The House of Peoples' Representatives elected Abiy as Prime Minister. He immediately began making large political reforms. He released thousands of political prisoners and allowed opposition groups to exist again. He also changed the economy by privatizing state companies. This included making parts of Ethiopian Airlines more open to business.

His early success earned him international recognition. In 2019, Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

He received this for resolving the border conflict with Eritrea. This was a major step for international cooperation. However, his leadership also faced deep challenges. In 2020, a conflict known as the Tigray War began. This two-year war involved the national army and the Eritrean army against the TPLF.

The war in Tigray caused a severe humanitarian crisis. It led to widespread displacement and thousands of deaths. Even after the Pretoria Agreement ended that war, new tensions arose. In 2023, Abiy tried to bring regional militias into the national army. Some groups, like the Fano, refused and began the War in Amhara. Ethiopia has since faced issues with human rights and media censorship. These conflicts continue to shape the nation today.
