The mountains have many different parts. There are high plateaus and rocky peaks. One peak is Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès. It is 2,022 meters tall. This is the highest point in Niger.

Life in the Aïr is very special. Most of the desert is dry. But the mountains can be green. This happens because of rain and underground water. This water creates oases. An oasis is a green spot with water in a dry land.
The Aïr is also a place of history. Long ago, people carved art into the rocks. Some of these carvings are very large. One famous carving shows giraffes.
The Aïr Mountains are a large, triangular group of mountains. They sit in northern Niger inside the big Sahara Desert.

Nature works in unique ways in this high place. The mountains are made of many different types of rock. Some parts are dark granite that stands out against the sand.

History is carved into the very stones of the Aïr. People have made rock art here for thousands of years. Some of this art dates back to 6000 BCE.

There are many important facts about the size and life here. The highest peak is Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès. It reaches a height of 2,022 meters.
The Aïr Mountains connect different parts of the natural world. They sit between the Sahara desert plants and the Sahel plants. This makes the mountains a special meeting place for life. The town of Agadez is the capital of this region. It is located in the heart of Tuareg country. Many people here have traditionally moved with camels and goats. They trade goods like salt and cloth through long desert paths. This makes the Aïr a vital link in the desert.
The Aïr Mountains, or Aïr Massif, are a triangular mountain group in northern Niger. They sit within the Sahara Desert. This massif is part of the West Saharan montane xeric woodlands ecoregion.
The geology of the Aïr is complex and varied. The massif consists of nine almost circular massifs rising from a rocky plateau.
Volcanic activity has shaped much of the landscape. The Aïr contains several volcanic features. These include the extinct caldera of Arakao. There are also volcanic cones and tuff rings. The region features Cenozoic lava flows made of trachyte and hawaiite. One of the largest ring dike systems in the world is located here.
The mountains reach significant heights. Mont Idoukal-n-Taghès is the highest point in Niger. It reaches an elevation of 2,022 meters. Other notable peaks include Mont Tamgak at 1,988 meters and Mont Greboun at 1,944 meters. The massif also includes Adrar Bous, Fadei, Chirriet, Taghmert, Agueraguer, Takaloukouzet, and Goundai.
Biodiversity in the Aïr is remarkably high. Scientists have recorded more than 430 vascular plant species there.
Human history in the Aïr is etched into the stone. The region is famous for rock art dating from 6000 BCE to 1000 CE. During the African humid period, the area was a pastoral land. Rock carvings show cattle and large mammals from this time. Later art depicts horses and chariots, indicating changes in the region. One famous example is the "Dabous Giraffes." These are massive carvings that stand five meters high.
The region has seen many political shifts. The Songhai Empire held Agadez and In-Gall in the early 15th century. In the 16th century, the Tuareg Sultanate of Agadez was created. The French arrived at the end of the 19th century. This arrival weakened the Tuareg Kels and led to resistance. In 1917, Agadez was besieged during a revolt led by Kaocen. These conflicts caused many populous places to be abandoned. Today, the area remains a place of significant cultural and geological importance.
