The fighting caused much damage. About one million people in Lebanon had to leave home. Many people in Israel also had to leave. The war killed between 1,191 and 1,300 Lebanese people. It also killed 165 Israelis. The United Nations helped make a deal to stop the war. This deal was called Resolution 1701. It called for both sides to stop fighting. Most Israeli troops left Lebanon in October.
The 2006 Lebanon War was a serious conflict that lasted for 34 days.

Hezbollah fought back using rockets and missiles. They fired close to 4,000 rockets into northern Israel.

History shows that there had been tension in this area for a long time.

The war ended because of help from the United Nations.

The 2006 Lebanon War was a 34-day armed conflict. It took place between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah is a militant group in Lebanon.
The conflict started with a cross-border raid. At 9:00 am on July 12, Hezbollah launched rocket attacks. These attacks targeted military positions near the coast. They also hit the Israeli town of Shlomi.
Israel responded to the raid with massive military force. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called the raid an act of war. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes and artillery fire. They targeted Hezbollah military sites in Lebanon. They also hit Lebanese civilian infrastructure.

Hezbollah fought back using guerrilla warfare tactics. They used hardened, hidden positions to engage the IDF. They also launched many rockets into northern Israel. Israeli sources say Hezbollah fired nearly 4,000 rockets. This was from an arsenal of about 15,000 missiles. These rockets caused damage to buildings and forests in Israel.

This war grew out of long-standing tensions in the region. Israel had invaded Lebanon in 1978 and 1982. Hezbollah formed in 1985 to fight the Israeli occupation. Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000. They moved back to a border called the Blue Line.
The United Nations helped end the hostilities. On August 11, 2006, the Security Council passed Resolution 1701.

The war had a very heavy human and physical cost. It killed between 1,191 and 1,300 Lebanese people. It also killed 165 Israelis.

After the war, different groups had different views of the results. Both Hezbollah and the Israeli government claimed victory. However, the Winograd Commission had a different view. They called the war a missed opportunity for Israel. They noted that the war did not lead to Hezbollah's disarmament. The conflict showed how deeply connected regional history and local groups are.
