This period was defined by a shift toward conservatism and free market economics. Many developed nations moved away from planned economies. Instead, they embraced laissez-faire capitalism. This is an economic system where businesses operate with very little government interference. This shift changed how countries traded with one another. It also changed where things were made.

Economic changes caused a massive relocation of manufacturing. Many large multinational corporations moved their operations to new locations. These included Thailand, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, and China. While some areas faced economic deconstruction, others saw massive growth. Japan and West Germany experienced significant economic expansion during these years. However, many developing nations struggled with severe debt crises. These countries often had to seek financial help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or the World Bank.

Political tensions were high due to the Cold War. This was a long period of competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. At the start of the decade, tensions escalated rapidly. President Ronald Reagan

By the late 1980s, the political landscape began to shift. Mikhail Gorbachev became a leader in the Soviet Union. He introduced two major policies: glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost meant increased openness and legalized dissent. Perestroika involved restructuring the economy to allow limited forms of capitalism. These changes reduced the power of the Communist Party. By 1988, relations between communist and capitalist blocs had improved.

In 1989, the U.S. also launched a military action in Panama to remove dictator Manuel Noriega. These wars showed the intense instability of the era.

Humanity also saw massive changes in population and health. The world population grew from 4.4 billion to 5.3 billion people. This was one of the largest periods of growth in human history. There were approximately 1.33 billion births and 480 million deaths. Growth was especially fast in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. However, the decade also faced the AIDS epidemic. This disease has since killed an estimated 40.4 million people. Additionally, the theory of global warming began to spread among scientists and politicians.

Technology and science reached new milestones. The global internet began to take shape in academic circles. Tim Berners-Lee formalized the concept of the World Wide Web by 1989. In homes, computers became much more common. The 1981 IBM PC and the 1984 Macintosh changed how people used technology.
