During these hundred years, new ideas began to spread very quickly. Many people started to think about fairness and how governments should work. This period is often called the Age of Enlightenment. These new ways of thinking led to many big revolutions. People began to challenge the power of kings and noble leaders. This era changed how humans lived and how they treated one another.

Many different things happened at the same time in different places. In Europe, the Industrial Revolution started in the middle of the century.

This meant people used new machines to make goods instead of just using hands. One very important invention was the steam engine developed by James Watt.

At the same time, the Atlantic slave trade grew much larger. This was a very sad and unfair part of history. Many people were moved across the ocean against their will. While this happened in the Atlantic, slave trading actually declined in Russia and China.

History shows us that many leaders and nations rose or fell. In France, the French Revolution began in 1789.

The Qianlong Emperor oversaw a huge expansion of his land.

There were many specific events that shaped the century's timeline. In 1703, Peter the Great founded the city of Saint Petersburg. In 1714, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the mercury-in-glass thermometer.

This helped people measure temperature more accurately. In 1739, the Persian leader Nader Shah invaded Delhi. He defeated a very large army at the Battle of Karnal. In 1761, Ahmad Shah Durrani won the Third Battle of Panipat. These wars changed which empires held power in places like India and Persia.

We can see how these old events connect to our world today. The inventions of this time, like the steam engine, helped start our modern world.

Even the way we measure temperature comes from this era. The ideas about rights and freedom also shaped how many countries work now. Many of the borders we see on maps today started to form then. Learning about the 18th century helps us understand how our modern life began. It was a busy century that moved the world forward in many ways.

This era was defined by massive shifts in political power and social structures. It saw the rise of Enlightenment thinking, which emphasized reason and individual rights. These ideas eventually triggered several Atlantic Revolutions. These revolutions challenged the traditional authority of monarchs and aristocrats. Consequently, the foundations of modern democratic governance began to emerge during these hundred years.

One of the most significant shifts was the start of the Industrial Revolution. This movement began in the middle of the century and fundamentally altered human society. It replaced manual labor with machine-based manufacturing.

A key technological driver was the development of the Watt steam engine. This invention provided a reliable source of power for factories. This transition also changed the physical environment through increased production. As industry grew, the ways people worked and lived underwent radical changes.

Global power dynamics shifted through intense military conflicts and colonial expansion. In Europe, Great Britain emerged as a preeminent power following several wars. The War of the Spanish Succession and the Seven Years' War were critical.

Britain's growing authority eventually led to tension with its Thirteen Colonies. This friction acted as a catalyst for the American Revolution. Meanwhile, France remained a major world superpower until the Napoleonic Wars. The French Revolution of 1789 further destabilized the old European order.

In Asia, several massive empires experienced periods of both growth and instability. The Qing dynasty in China entered a High Qing era. This period was marked by peace, prosperity, and territorial expansion.

The Qianlong Emperor oversaw significant cultural and societal growth. In Japan, the Tokugawa shogunate maintained a peaceful era known as Pax Tokugawa. This era allowed for the flourishing of arts and scientific knowledge. These advancements often arrived through the Dutch port of Nagasaki.

South and West Asia also saw significant leadership changes and conflicts. In Persia, Nader Shah led successful military campaigns. He famously invaded and plundered Delhi in 1739.

This event disrupted the Mughal Empire, which was already fragmenting. In India, the Maratha Confederacy expanded its influence significantly. However, the British East India Company also began conquering eastern India. By the end of the century, the Company held rule over the south after the Anglo-Mysore Wars.

Scientific and intellectual progress reached new heights during this century. Many essential tools and systems used today were established then. In 1714, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the mercury-in-glass thermometer.

He later proposed the Fahrenheit temperature scale. In 1742, Anders Celsius proposed a temperature scale that would later be named in his honor. Intellectuals also published works like the Encyclopédie to spread knowledge. These efforts helped codify the scientific method and modern learning.

The century also contained deeply troubling social realities. The Atlantic slave trade expanded across the Atlantic Ocean during this time. This involved the forced movement of many people and caused immense suffering. While this trade grew in the Atlantic, it actually declined in Russia and China. In Africa, the Ethiopian Empire entered the Zemene Mesafint. During this time, regional noblemen held true power while the emperor was a figurehead. These complex social structures show the uneven progress of the era.
