For example, the Dutch Golden Age brought great wealth to the Netherlands. In France, the "Grand Siècle" was defined by the rule of King Louis XIV. This century also saw the Scientific Revolution, which changed human understanding of nature. Many historians also refer to this time as the "General Crisis" due to various global instabilities.

Scientific progress relied on new tools and mathematical discoveries.

Other thinkers like René Descartes and Blaise Pascal explored philosophy and mathematics. They mastered concepts such as calculus, logarithms, and air pressure. New inventions like the telescope and microscope allowed people to see the very large and the very small. Even calculating machines began to appear during this time.

Global trade and corporate structures underwent a massive shift.

In France, Louis XIV solidified absolute monarchy. He transformed the Palace of Versailles from a hunting lodge into a place of surveillance. This helped him control the French nobility. In England, the monarch faced increasing conflict with Parliament. This tension led to the English Civil War and ended the dominance of the English monarchy. In Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603. By the 1630s, Japan began the Sakoku policy, which isolated the country until the 19th century.

Major empires shaped the landscape of Asia and the Islamic world. The Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires were known as the gunpowder empires. They grew significantly in strength during this century. In India, the Mughal Empire saw the construction of the Taj Mahal starting in 1632. In China, the Ming dynasty collapsed under pressure from Manchu warlords. Nurhaci, Hong Taiji, and the Shunzhi Emperor led the conquest that founded the Qing dynasty. This transition involved decades of economic problems and civil wars. In Southeast Asia, the Mataram and Aceh Sultanates remained major regional powers.

Conflict was a constant feature of the 17th century.

The Thirty Years' War devastated Europe from 1618 to 1648. This conflict was precipitated by the Defenestration of Prague. The war ended with the Peace of Westphalia, which altered the power of the Holy Roman Empire. Other major wars included the Dutch–Portuguese War and the Nine Years' War. In Russia, a severe famine between 1601 and 1603 killed perhaps one-third of the population. This period of instability eventually ended with the rise of the House of Romanov in 1613.

Cultural and institutional growth continued despite these many wars.

These developments created a foundation for the modern intellectual and cultural world. The 17th century acted as a bridge between the medieval past and the modern age.
