He was born in June 1876 in a village called Thakpo Langdun. His parents, Kunga Rinchen and Lobsang Dolma, were a peasant couple. In 1878, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. He was given his special name by the Panchen Lama, Tenpai Wangchuk. He was enthroned at the Potala Palace in 1879. However, he did not take full political power until 1895.

He spent many years studying to become a great scholar. He studied at Drepung, which was the largest monastery in Tibet. He earned the highest degree in Buddhist philosophy called Geshey Lharampa. He also studied to become a Master of Buddhist Philosophy.

During his studies, he met a man named Agvan Dorzhiev. Dorzhiev was a tutor and a debating partner for the young leader. This friendship helped the Dalai Lama connect with other countries like Russia.

Thubten Gyatso was a highly educated scholar. He studied at Drepung, the largest monastery in Tibet. He earned the Geshey Lharampa degree. This is the highest doctorate of Buddhist Philosophy. He also worked toward becoming a Tsanid-Hambo. This title means "Master of Buddhist Philosophy." During his studies, he met Agvan Dorzhiev. Dorzhiev was a Mongol subject of Russia. He became a tutor and a debating partner for the young leader. This connection helped the Dalai Lama build ties with Russia.

His life involved many periods of exile. In 1904, a British expedition led by Sir Francis Younghusband entered Tibet. This caused the Dalai Lama to flee to Urga in Mongolia. The journey took four months. In Urga, he met the 8th Bogd Gegeen Jebtsundamba Khutuktu. This was the spiritual leader of Outer Mongolia. During this time, reports suggested a plan to secede from China. The goal was to create an independent federal state. This plan sought support from Russia to avoid bloodshed.

Political changes in China also affected Tibet. The Qing dynasty claimed sovereignty over Tibet. In 1905, a Tibetan rebellion occurred in places like Batang. This rebellion was driven by anti-foreign sentiment. Monks in Batang attacked Chinese officials and French missionaries. They also targeted Catholic converts and churches. This violence was linked to xenophobia. The British and Chinese signed treaties in 1904 and 1906. These documents addressed the administration of Tibetan territory.

Thubten Gyatso traveled to many places to strengthen international ties. In 1908, he visited Wutai Shan in China. He met many foreign envoys there. One was Gustaf Mannerheim, a Russian colonel. Mannerheim later became the 6th President of Finland. During their meeting, Mannerheim gave the Dalai Lama a Browning revolver. He showed him how to reload it for safety. The Dalai Lama also met the Guangxu Emperor in Beijing. He refused to kowtow, which is a traditional sign of submission.

In 1910, a Chinese military expedition forced him to flee again. He spent nearly two years in Sikkim and Darjeeling. During this exile, he met the Viceroy of India, Lord Minto. This helped restore relations with the British. In 1911, a revolution began in China. This led to the fall of the Qing dynasty. In 1912, Tibet was proclaimed an independent country.

Thubten Gyatso returned to Lhasa in January 1913. He brought his aide, Tsarong Dzasa, with him. The new Chinese government offered him official ranks. He refused these ranks. He chose to lead Tibet as its own spiritual and political head. He worked to reform the government. He increased the number of lay officials. This was done to reduce the power of the monks. He also worked to rebuild Tibet's geopolitical position.
